A lot of people like Astronomy.  Some of these are professionals who work in observatories.  Others are regular people who enjoy it as a hobby.  Some of these hobbyists have even made important discoveries at times.  In the old days it was the job of telescopes.  Astronomy software makes it possible study the stars and other phenomena without them.  This is a discussion of just some of the available software.

One of the most well known programs is SETI@Home.  The idea behind this software was to create supercomputer made up of many small computers connected via the Internet.  The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence was set to search space for radio signals that indicated intelligent design.  Scientists used supercomputers to go through all the data collected.  Today, however, it’s up to people’s computers at home and at the office.  No red light will flash if intelligent life is located.  But people can take pride in being involved in the search for intelligence outside our home planet.

A 3-D screen saver is another type of astronomy software.  These bring space objects to life when you’re not using your computer.  These are anything from static images to interactive 3-D views.  A search engine like Google can help you locate one of these programs.

Not many people know what F.I.T.S is.  It’s NASA’s flexible image transport system that delivers data including 2-D and 3-D imaging.  Many programs use this standard.  there’s freeware such as FITSview and professional programs like AstroArt.  Google can help you find more.  Try Duke University’s website.

There is even software that helps adjust for imperfections in telescope lenses.  The software displays images that help the hobbyist adjust the telescope.

There is a lot more astronomy software out there in the world.  Web search for it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
